Mt. Rushmore of DC Sports
I’ll start off by saying this was an incredibly challenging task. Even in a city like D.C., who was held without a championship for what seems like FOREVER, narrowing down the legends to a top 4 list is tough. As I began thinking about creating the Mt. Rushmore of D.C. Sports, I thought there were two ways to do it:
1) One figure from each of the 4 major teams (Redskins, Capitals, Nationals, Wizards/Bullets).
2) An overall top 4 (regardless of team/sport)
I decided to cheat and do it both ways, because this is my goddamn blog, so I make the rules.
Here it goes:
Option 1: One figure from each of the 4 major teams
Alex Ovechkin, Joe Gibbs, Wes Unseld, Ryan Zimmerman
Alex Ovechkin
Easiest selection on the list. He’s arguably the greatest goal scorer in the history of the NHL, and the most dominate athlete in the history of D.C. sports. We are experiencing true greatness, and we should be thankful for it. Also, the bender he went on following the Stanley Cup win would have been enough by itself to get him on this list.
Joe Gibbs
Quite possibly the most beloved figure in DC sports history. He’s responsible for all 3 of the franchise’s Super Bowl titles, and he did it with 3 different QBs. That’s an unbelievable accomplishment, and for my money, it will never happen again. He built a dynasty – a fucking dynasty with the Washington Redskins. Can you imagine that? Hail.
Wes Unseld
I’ll be honest here, I’m too young to know much about the guy. But who was I going to put here? Arenas? Wall? JORDAN?
Ryan Zimmerman
The 1st selection the Washington Nationals ever made, and it was a good one. He has been the franchise player since day 1. So many memorable moments, so many beautiful swings, so many bare hand grabs at 3rd base. It’s impossible not to love this guy, but if I’m being honest, Harper takes his spot if he resigns with the Nats. And if he doesn’t, Scherzer is damn close to taking this spot.

Darrell Green
I’d like to see Darrell Green in his prime race current-day Trea Turner. This dude was electric, and gets my vote for greatest Redskin of all time. Google his highlight reel and you will see why.
John Riggins
The Diesel! He provided the most iconic run in franchise history. On 4th and 1 in 4th Quarter of Super Bowl XVII, he ripped off a 43 yard TD run to put the Skins on top for good. He finished the game with 166 yards on the ground, and was named Super Bowl MVP. He was a tank, hence the nickname, and possibly a bit crazy. He played multiple games hungover (and played great), and even asked his line to block LESS for him.
