The NCAA is Corrupt
NBC Sports– A total of 13 North Carolina players will be suspended for at least one game this season after the school self-reported secondary violations to the NCAA. The offense is related to the selling of team-issued shoes.
College football has a HUGE problem on it’s hands, and it isn’t going away.
In 2017, the NCAA generated a reported 1.1 BILLION dollars in revenue. BILL-EYON.
A quick look at a list of NCAA football coaches 2017 salaries will show that the 50th highest paid annual salary would be none other than North Carolina head coach Larry Fedora, cashing in a cool $2.29 million this season. Thats #50 folks. Climb on to the top of that list and you’ll find Nick Saban, who is worth $11.1 million PER SEASON to Alabama.
Just for perspective, the 2 highest paid coaches in the NFL are Bill Belichick and Jon Gruden, who both make right around $10 million per season. So let’s get this straight; the NFL is one of the most successful, money making machines in the world. Revenue is generated from network TV deals, commercial advertising/sponsorship, ticket sales and merchandise sales. The NCAA functions in the EXACT same manner.
In the NFL, the athletes who ARE the product, make millions upon millions of dollars a year in not only salary, but endorsement deals as well. The NCAA does not allow any endorsement deals for their athletes, and they pay them precisely ZERO dollars per year.
Ok, I know what some of you might be saying. “But they get scholarships and get their educations completely paid for”. Let’s be real here folks, the strenuous training, practice, film and travel schedules of NCAA D-1 Athletes don’t allow these STUDENT-ATHLETES to be students. I went to UMD, and had multiple classes with some of the football players and I’ll tell you something, if they didn’t come late or leave class early, they weren’t there at all. And at Maryland, the football team isn’t even a big-time program like many universities in the country.
So yes, the majority of the D-1 athletes for the 2 major collegiate sports (football and basketball) are getting full-rides, but the quality of the education is not equivalent to a normal student at these institutions, and the scholarship still doesn’t realistically provide money for these kids to live.
Furthermore, without diving too far down this rabbit hole, these athletes are sacrificing their health for the profit of the schools and the NCAA. It happens all the time where a top college player, well on their way to being drafted in the NFL, ends up suffering a devastating injury that ends their football career before they even get a taste of the payoff for their hard work. How much is that Humanities degree worth after that? And even if they don’t get injured, only about 1.6% of NCAA football players make it to the NFL.
Let’s look at this incident for what it is. You have 13 student-athletes who felt the need to sell their sneakers in an effort to put a few bucks in their pockets, while you have head coaches making $2 million a year at the same school. The athletes don’t have time to have regular jobs, in most cases not enough time to maximize the quality of their education, and put their bodies on the line every week for the profit of their school and the NCAA. And conveniently, the NCAA allowed these suspensions to be staggered to, “account for roster depth concerns that raise the health hazards to the entire team”. Hmm, I’m sure…
So how is this corruption? The only obligation the the school has is to educate and training. The student..student is required to meet academic standards and be competitive and live in accordance to ncaa rules. So education and training to be competitive with aspirations of being a pro. Being paid kind of takes away the rationale for selecting a school, I suppose the redshirt rookie freshman with no stats will need financial aid for lawyers and agents fees….hmmmm.
