Best Days of the Year, Ranked
Watching a team I despise get eliminated, and seeing their fans in misery, is one of my favorite days of the year. One of those days just happened, as the Red Sox eliminated the Yankees in the NLDS. There aren’t too many things better than seeing a bunch of New Yorkers in a state of depression. That inspired me to create a list. Below you will find my absolute favorite days of the year. This is my personal list, so if you disagree, let me know!
- Birthday
As you get older, these become less exciting. Ten years ago, my birthday probably would have been near the top of the list. Now I’m just glad I keep having them. It’s still a good day though, because it’s one of the few days of the year (or only day if you are a husband) when you get to make all the decisions. You get to pick where to eat, what to do, and who to be around. My next birthday is #30, so I’ll probably wake up with a hangover I’ve never experienced before. It’ll be great!
- Sunday at The Masters
I’m a bit of a golf nerd. I get all sorts of pumped up for Masters’ Sunday. It’s the biggest tournament of the year, on an amazing course, with the best players in the world. And the finishes always seem to be close. It also coincides with the beginning of spring, which means the end of winter (and winter is the worst). I just wish I had a quarter of the skills the pros have.
- New Year’s Eve
Watching the ball drop is pretty cool. It’s even better when Mariah Carey is completely lost on stage. It’s usually a fun party night involving lots of booze. Sign me up.
- Halloween
To be honest, I’ve never been a big Halloween guy. Costumes parties are pretty fun, but I could do without them. However, having kids has made Halloween so much better for me. They get so excited to dress up and go trick-or-treating. Experiencing their joy on that night is pretty cool. And when they go to bed, parents can take a dip into the candy bag. They won’t know if a few Snickers or Kit Kats go missing.
- Yankees Elimination Day
The day the Yankees get eliminated! No rings this year! My hatred for them isn’t even really rational. I’m a Nats fan, so they aren’t a big rival. They are just the worst. Their fans are so smug and embarrassing. Witnessing all of them in complete misery is just fantastic. And it’s even better when they are taken out by their bitter rivals. It’s OK, at least the Giants are good. Wait, no. The Jets? Nevermind.
Little known fact – it is impossible to put on pinstripes and not look like a complete douche.
- First Day of the NCAA Tournament
March Madness never disappoints. Day 1 is absolutely bananas. Everyone’s bracket is destroyed by about 4 p.m. on the first day of the tournament. The upsets are electric, the crowds are hot, and the amazing moments show up every single year. You can always count on this being a really fun day. Take off early on Thursday, grab some beer, and enjoy the day. Also, the way the tip-off times are staggered is absolutely genius.
- Friday Before Memorial Day Weekend
The unofficial kickoff to Summer, which is the undisputed greatest season of the year. The Friday before Memorial Day Weekend is the start of a long and awesome weekend. If you have a normal job and take off on Friday, you get to enjoy a four-day weekend. Find a beach, a boat, and some booze and get ready for summer fun.
- Opening Day
MLB Opening Day is just fantastic. After a long winter, baseball is finally back. The festivities take place all day long, and you can have a blast even if you don’t go to the game. This is the perfect day to skip work and head to the park. It doesn’t matter if the team wins or loses, everyone if just happy to enjoy some baseball. MLB Ballparks are always updating their food and beverage options, and this serves as the first chance for fans to try them out. Bring on April.
- Cowboys Elimination Day
Ahh, yes. What a glorious day. America’s favorite bandwagon loses it’s wheels and comes crashing down. The most annoying franchise in all of sports is sent home, because they suck. Not much makes me happier than watching the Cowboys lose and immediately reading the sad tweets online. The Cowboys mystique has been dead for quite some time now, and we are reminded of that on this day each year. Even better news, this day will be coming early this year!

- Thanksgiving
This is pretty simple: amazing food and lots of it. On top of that, we get football. Also, “A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving” is an awesome movie.
Side note: Parades are extremely overrated.
- June 7th
This day will live on in D.C. Sports history forever. I waited my entire life to see one of my teams win a championship, and the Capitals finally did it. On June 7th, 2018 the Caps beat the Golden Knights in Game 5 to secure The Cup. This day will be treated as a holiday for the foreseeable suture.
- Fantasy Football Draft Day
I’m addicted to fantasy football, so this day happens multiple times per year. I get to geek out and create rankings, cheat sheets, and player lists before I draft a team that will inevitably let me down. Draft day is the absolute best part about fantasy football. If your league isn’t holding a live, in-person draft, you are doing it wrong. It’s so damn fun to get your league together, drink beer, eat unhealthy food, and talk football.
- Super Bowl Sunday
What a spectacle. One game for all the marbles, and the entire world is watching. It’s the single most watched program on TV every single year. Even if you don’t like football, you get a halftime show (ideally not Maroon 5) and great food. This is the best playoff game in all of sports.
- July 4th
My wardrobe consists of three colors: Red, White, and motherfucking Blue. And I can wash them all together because those colors don’t run. July 4th is the celebration of the greatest country in the entire world. It’s a day to partake in everything we love about America. I’ll name a few: Hot dogs, fireworks, cheeseburgers, pool parties, beaches, and bud heavies. We get to wear the best colors on earth while partying all day and night. If I were designing my ideal day, this would be it.
All jokes aside, I love this country. We are lucky as hell to live here. People like to say the country is in trouble to push their political agenda, but it’s all BS. We, without a doubt, live in the greatest country in the world. We aren’t thankful enough for that, especially to the brave men and women who serve our county everyday so we don’t have to.
- Christmas
I love Christmas so much. Everything about it is great. Christmas songs, decorations, gifts, parties, food, and family. It’s all amazing. Everybody gets in the holiday spirit on Christmas. It’s a great feeling waking up on Christmas morning and watching my kids open their gifts. That’s what it’s all about. When I was growing up, my dad made a big deal out of Christmas. The house was always decorated, we always celebrated, and I loved every minute of it. It’s almost that time of year!
They have doctors and nurses constantly on staff and have medically assisted detox to help people through the
initial week or so. I loved the majority of the therapists.
I used cocaine for the first time. It didn’t phase me and
I began using cocaine at school and eventually got enough so
that I could make some extra cash. One of my mistakes was bringing this substance
to school to sell to my classmates. I was very “successful”
but the principal caught on and long story short, I got kicked out of school.
My family was furious. I continued my schooling at home and did quite
well. My family thought it was all over there.
But it did not change who I was spending my time with.
It did not change my relationship with drugs and alcohol.
At around five days sober, I checked into an inpatient treatment program.
I learned that I had to get sober not for other people or to look good
in the face of my wreckage that I had to get sober for myself.
Most importantly, I had to learn that I was worth
it and to my classmates too. I am truly very sorry for what I’ve done.
