2019 Washington Redskins Offseason Preview
The 2018 Redskins roster looked A LOT different in December than it did back in August.
We went from losing our 2nd overall pick and projected stud at RB, to being the only team to give a “washed up” AP the chance to rush for over 1,000 yds once again. We lost our biggest FA acquisition in Alex Smith to a *possible* career-ending injury, and our backup just 2 weeks later to a similar one. Add in 23 other players on IR, the signing of Reuben Foster, and the release of DJ Swearinger, and the December roster was almost unrecognizable.
So it is only logical that we can expect TONS of roster turnover this year. Here is a preview of who the Skins should let walk, and who they should be first in line to sign.
*DISCLAIMER: I’m a firm believer that if the front office wants someone bad enough, they will figure out a way. But I will try to be as realistic as possible with cap implications.
Let em’ Walk
HaHa Clinton-Dix
Blown coverages. Bad angles. Poor tackling. It honestly doesn’t matter what the cap number is, there’s a reason GB wanted him out. Cut ties and take the lost draft pick.
Josh Norman
$14.5 million cap number in 2019. Clear decline in performance and interest in football, for that matter. We could get at least 2 average DB’s for the money we would pay him, and face it, he’s only average at this point anyways.
Vernon Davis
This one is a tough one for me, considering our “stud” TE Jordan Reed can’t stay on the field or run block (he almost made this list, quite honestly). But Davis has a significant cap number at over $6mil, and his performance dropped off this year. The all too often dropped passes, and the fact that he is 34 years old, makes this the perfect time to save some money and let him go.
Reuben Foster
Listen, I’m a firm believer in the presumption of innocence. And in today’s society, everything turns into a witch hunt just based off of accusations. However, the Skins are in no position to take on the drama associated with this guy. He’s too polarizing, too divisive, and quite honestly just not enough a stud to deal with the baggage (i.e. Colin Kaepernick).
Mason Foster
I was a huge Mason Foster guy for the last couple years. He is just one of those blue-collar, hard-working guys that won’t jump off the paper on the stat sheet or on film, but he is a thumper in the middle who leads by example.
Until this:
His story was back and forth on if it was him, wasn’t him, blah blah. Truth is, it was more than likely him spewing the venom, and he’s another one that isn’t good enough to deal with that cancerous attitude.
Welcome Back
Preston Smith
After a relatively disappointing 2018 campaign, I don’t think Preston helped his market value for 2019. However, I truly think this is one of those guys that is on the cusp of figuring it out and becoming a stud.
The Skins have a MEAN DL, that can truly open it up for Smith and Kerrigan on the edges moving forward.
Stick with this guy and watch him become a superstar in DC.
Jamison Crowder
Crowder missed a good part of the year with injury, but when he is healthy he is one of the top 5 slot receivers in the league. In today’s passing games, a good slot guy is a must, and the jury is still out on Trey Quinn.
Maurice Harris
Mo is one of those guys that the coaches LOVE. He is a big body who can run routes and has average- above average hands. Will he be a #1 caliber WR? Probably not. But can he be a #2 outside WR, absolutely.
Adrian Peterson
AP WAS the Skins offense this year. Amassing over 1,000 yds and 7 TD’s on the ground at 33 years old behind our beat up line? Borderline impossible. But he did it.
Supposedly Guice already has plans to work out with AP this offseason, and having him as a mentor at least another year would be priceless for our young stud RB.
The Open Market
Preston Brown, ILB
Preston Brown was a big signing for the Bengals last offseason, but they only gave him a one-year deal and his season ended early with a knee injury.
Brown was a stud in Buffalo for the 1st 4 years of his career as a perennial 100+ tackle guy who showed a lot of durability. He could be a perfect replacement in the middle of our defense to compliment the rotation of Dion-Hamilton and Zach Brown.
Tyrann Mathieu, S
The Honeybadger found a new home in Houston this year after the Cardinals cut him as a cap casualty.
Mathieu had a decent year, using his versatility to bring pressure and chaos in a lot of defensive packages.
They’ll have to compete with Houston on getting him in their lockerroom but if they can find a way, Mathieu would be the perfect guy for the Skins secondary.
Bradley Roby, CB
In the last year of his rookie contract, Roby had another solid year with Denver. He was exposed a bit when matched up against #1’s, but was very effective as a 2/3 corner.
With Dunbar as the #1, Roby could be a nice option on the other side of the field.
Devin Funchess, WR
The Panthers traded for Torrey Smith and drafted DJ Moore prior to the 2019 campaign. Although Funchess got plenty of attention in the offense this year, it is clear that he isn’t viewed as THE guy to Carolina.
I watched Funchess first hand this year at FedEx Field make some spectacular catches with his size and athleticism, and he would be the perfect compliment to our otherwise under-sized receiving corp in 2019.
Teddy Bridgewater, QB
If there’s a player in the league that deserves another chance it is Bridgewater.
After one of the worst knee injuries you can get, Bridgewater is looking for someone to give him a chance, and I think the Skins are a perfect fit.
I’m going to go out on a limb and say Alex Smith isn’t coming back from his leg injury. He’ll be 35 and recovering from that compound fracture may just be too much. The Skins already proved they aren’t afraid to give players a chance (i.e. Peterson), and with a weak draft class at QB, Teddy and the Skins could just be the perfect fit for each other.
The Draft
The Skins have the 15th overall pick in the draft, as well as picks in the 2nd, 3rd, 5th and 7th (4th rounder was traded for Clinton-Dix, 6th given up for Adonis Alexander in last years supplemental draft).
Here are a few players the Skins should be targeting.
Mack Wilson, LB, Alabama
Why not snatch another stud from Bama?
Wilson is an athletic, rangy LB that could serve as a hybrid front 7/ back 4 guy in the Skins defense that has been lacking that kind of player in recent years.
Trayvon Mullen, CB, Clemson
The secondary is an area on this Skins defense that they just haven’t been able to get right.
It hasn’t been since Champ Bailey that the Skins had a stud corner that teams really had to account for. Mullen could be that guy with his size and speed.
D.K. Metcalf, WR, Ole Miss
At 6’4″, 225 with freakish athleticism, Metcalf could be a key to an explosive Skins offense in 2019.
At Ole Miss, Metcalf’s numbers aren’t off the charts, but his skills and pedigree are going to make him a top-of-the draft talent in March.
Hope and Change
One can only hope that the Skins make some changes on the sidelines and in the front office.
