Sleeper Starts of the Week (Week 5)
If you’ve ever played fantasy football, you know things change in a hurry. It would be nice if the NFL season played out exactly as we had planned when drafting our fantasy team, but that’s never the case. Sometimes things go sideways, leaving owners forced to scramble on a weekly basis. The intent of this article is to help you find some players to plug and play while dealing with injuries, bye weeks, ineffectiveness, or just plain bad luck. Here are some guidelines I will follow when identifying weekly sleepers:
- I will use weekly positional rankings to identify players
- I will try to identify players who may be available on the waiver wire
- QBs will generally be ranked outside the top 12
- RBs will generally be ranked outside the top 20
- WRs will generally be ranked outside the top 30
- TEs will generally be ranked outside the top 10
These are players who you should feel comfortable starting, and who I believe will provide solid production for the week. Let’s jump right in.
Quarterbacks
Alex Smith (@ Saints)
This is pretty simple. The Saints are going to score some points. The game script will force the Redskins to throw the ball. He might not light it up down the field, but Jordan Reed and Chris Thompson should be heavily involved. I like Smith to finish in the top 10 this week, as some of the more consistent QB options have tough matchups (Wentz vs. Vikings, Cousins @ Eagles, Mahomes vs. Jaguars, etc.).
Blake Bortles (@ Chiefs)
Here’s a crazy stat: over the last 10 regular season games, Blake Bortles is QB1. He’s NUMBER ONE. Ahead of Brees, Brady, and everyone else. Now obviously he’s not a great QB, and he’s had some really bad games in that stretch. That also means he puts up huge numbers from time to time. I think this week ends up being one of the big games for him. The Chiefs defense is not very good, so the Jags will have ample opportunity to put up points. I also believe Mahomes will find a way to score on the vaunted Jags D. This game could be sneaky high scoring, and Bortles will benefit from that.
Running Backs
Aaron Jones (@ Lions)
Jones is on the verge of taking over the starting RB job for the Packers. Aaron Rodgers went to bat for him, saying they hadn’t seen talent like his in a while. When Rodgers is on your side, that usually bodes well (look at Devante Adams and Geronimo Allison). The Packers will get ahead in this game, which will lead to a good number touches for Jones. And by the way, the Lions run defense is atrocious. With the exception of the Patriots game, they have allowed at least one RB to score 22 points in each game. Jones will be that guy this week. I’d consider him a low-end RB2 with massive upside.
Mark Ingram (vs. Redskins)
There is risk involved here. This is Ingram’s first week back with the team, and Kamara has been lights out. One could reasonably assume that this is Kamara’s backfield, and he will dominate the touches. However, let’s not forget how last year played out. Kamara finished the season as RB3, while Ingram was right behind him at RB6. The Saints produced two RBs in the top six. This offense is a powerhouse, and there is more than enough room for two solid RBs. Additionally, the Saints will not want to overwork Kamara, in an effort to ensure he is not worn down come playoff time. I get it if you want to wait a week to see how this play out, but the RB landscape is a mess. Ingram provides a great ceiling if you need help at the position.
Wide Receivers
Ryan Grant (@ Patriots)
This game feels like a Pats blowout. Luck will be forced to throw the ball a ton to try to stay in this game. T.Y. Hilton will be inactive this week, meaning Ryan Grant is the top WR option for the Colts. Grant racked up seven targets last week, and this week should be similar. His stat line won’t blow you away, but he’s got a good chance to hit 80-100 yards with the possibility of a TD. I view him as a relatively safe WR3/4 this week.
Geronimo Allison (@ Lions)
Geronimo is my guy. If he fails I will go down with him, but he’s not going to fail. He’s immensely talented, he has the support of Rodgers, and he’s the WR3 on an elite offense. And by the way, Cobb is banged up, which presents an even greater opportunity for Allison. I believe he will finish the season as the second highest scoring skill position player on the packers. He is currently on pace for 76 catches, 1,156 yards, and 8 TDs. That would have made him the WR7 last season. He is a great WR option, and one you should feel confident in starting. If you play in a league with me, that won’t be possible because I own him everywhere. But for everyone else, Allison is a high-end WR3 with top 20 upside.
Tight Ends
Vance McDonald (vs. Falcons)
The Steelers play at home this week against a really weak Falcons defense. This one will be high scoring, with the over/under is set at 57.5. McDonald is the TE you want in Pittsburgh, as he now dominates snaps over Jesse James. As I’ve said before, TEs are a nightmare, and it’s next to impossible to find consistent production. McDonald is one of the better bets, as he will be in a high scoring game, he will see a good number of targets, and he has TD potential. He is a quality streamer this week.
Nick Vannett (vs. Rams)
Will Dissly is out for the year, making Vannett the top option, at least until Ed Dickson is available. The Seattle TEs have gotten their fair share of targets, and that should continue this week. I’d expect Vannett to see 5+ targets in this game, but like most TEs, he will probably need to rely on a TD to have a productive day. The Rams have allowed the 3rd most receptions to TEs this year, so Vannett is a decent lottery ticket to find the end zone if you need a streaming option.
