My Childhood Sports Hero
Growing up in Maryland, I was raised a DC sports fan. This is Washington Redskins country (with the Dallas Cowboys being a close 2nd because people are assholes). The Baltimore Ravens didn’t get here until the mid 90’s, so technically the Baltimore area had no football team since the Colts left in the 80’s. The Washington Caps have had a cult following, which obviously has exploded because:
On the flip side, DC had no baseball team since the 60’s when the Senators left to go to Minnesota. So naturally, I grew up a Baltimore Orioles fan.
Now we’re talking the O’s of the 1990’s; Cal Ripken Jr, Rafael Palmeiro, Brady Anderson, Mike Bordick, Roberto Alomar. This was the foundation of Baltimore fandom that current day fans still harp on, and rightly so.
The heart and soul of that team was Cal. He was the big, strong armed gold glove short stop (later 3rd baseman) that had the highest baseball IQ in the game, a pretty damn good bat, and the work ethic and durability second to none. He played 2,632 straight games as a pro, shattering Lou Gehrig’s record of 2,130, and played the majority of them at a pretty damn high level.
One of my two biggest sports memories as a child involved Cal. The first being a game on July 25th, 1999 where the O’s were wearing the league’s special “Turn Ahead the Clock” uniforms. I was 9 years old at the time, and my dad took me to this inferno of a game. It was 127 degrees out, and we had to leave early because my dad got overheated and had a hangover headache.
Well after we left, Albert Belle proceeded to hit 3 home runs, the game went into extra innings, and we made it home back in front of the tv to watch Cal hit a walkoff single in the 11th to win the game.

At least I saw it one way or another.
The second most pivotal sports memory as a child was watching Cal play his 2,131st game. Baltimore and Major League Baseball did it right, throwing a big ceremony for Cal that lasted longer than the game did. It was pandemonium, it epitomized Cal.
Now as a Father, and avid baseball fan, I respect Cal Ripken Jr. and the way he played his career that much more. He’s exactly what you teach your son to be if he plays the game.
Now all that’s left is for Cal to come to the Nationals when Rizzo fires Martinez this offseason.
