Caps in the County
St. Mary’s County is one of the most unique places on the face of this planet. On top of being mine and Buster’s hometown, it is a hodgepodge of cultural paradoxes.
On one end of the county (THE county, as us locals call it) you have the lifeblood of the local economy, the Patuxent River Naval Air Station. Drive right around the corner from there and you are in the ghetto. Drive 20 miles west and you are in the 7D, (7th District; we like to differentiate by voting districts here), the conservative, main farming area of our region that is the sole reason 10 oz. beers exist. Drive to the northern end of the County and you have Amish country, farms upon farms of Amish families that sell produce, build sheds and cut logs.
Nestled in the heart of the county is Bowles Farm. Owned by the Bowles family, it is home to annual lawn mower races, the most popular wedding venue in the area, and an annual corn maze.
In years past, the corn maze has been designed to honor our local minor league baseball team, the local Naval base, and even Cal Ripken Jr.
But this year is different. This year is better. This the year of the Cup.
The Caps have always been a staple around our rural community down here in Southern Maryland. And the Bowles’ have cemented the memory in our local history.
Go visit Bowles farm at 22880 Budds Creek Rd. Clements, MD 20624. The corn maze is open 10 am- 6pm for 5 straight weekends, starting on September 29th. In addition to the maze, they have the area’s largest pumpkin patch, games and activities for children, and a cupcake shop on site that curates sweets like no other.
